대학원생 여러분께,

최근 약탈적 학술지와 학술대회가 기승을 부리고 있습니다. 약탈적 학술지/학술대회란 지식의 공유와 발전이란 목표로 작동하지 않고 돈을 벌려는 목적으로 논문을 출판하는 학술지와 개최되는 학술대회를 말하며, 이러한 학술지와 학술대회는 학계에서 업적으로 인정되지 않습니다. 이러한 학술지와 학술대회는 홍보와 판촉을 많이 하기 때문에 학생들이 잘 모르고 지원하기가 쉽습니다. 약탈적 학술지 및 학술대회를 피하기 위한 몇 가지 가이드를 알려드립니다.

학회에 지원하거나 학술지에 논문을 제출할 때, 다음과 같은 사항을 점검하시기 바랍니다.

1) 이 학회/학술지에 대해 들어본 적이 있는가

2) 웹사이트와 이메일 주소는 합법적인가 (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail등 무료계정을 이용하는 학회/학술지는 의심스럽습니다)

3) 내가 존경하는 교수 혹은 동료가 학술지에 게재하거나 학회에서 발표한 적 있는가

4) 주최측이 아첨하는 이메일을 보내는가 (정상적인 학술지/학회에서 일어나지 않는 일입니다)

5) 주최측이 이 학회/학술지가 권위있다고 주장하는가

6) 누가 이 학회를 주관하고 있는 지 알고 있는가

7) 신속한 수락을 보증하는가 (peer review process를 거치면 그렇게 빠른 게재가 가능하지 않습니다)

위와 같은 사항 외에도 지나치게 좋은 기회를 주는 것처럼 홍보하는 학회/학술지는 유의하셔야 합니다. 첨부한 파일도 확인하셔서 약탈적 학술지/학술대회에 아까운 시간과 에너지를 쓰지 않으시기 바랍니다.

Predatory conferences and journals are a growing problem in academia. Predatory journals and conferences do not operate to share and improve our communal knowledge but operate to extort money from junior scholars. Presenting at such conferences or publishing in such journals is not considered an academic accomplishment. These conferences and journals are eager to promote themselves so it is easy for young scholars to be deceived. Here is a list of things you should consider when applying for a conference or submitting an essay to a journal.

1. Have you heard about this conference/journal before?

2. What is the corresponding email address of the conference/journal? (it is not common for legitimate conferences/journals to use free email domains such as Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.)

3. Has any of the professors and colleagues I know presented at the conference or published in the journal in question?

4. Does the conference/journal use obsequious language to solicit your paper? 

5. Does the conference/journal boast about its authority?

6. Do you know who is sponsoring/managing the conference?

7. Does the journal guarantee a quick review process with a good chance of publication? (this usually means there's no peer review process)
